Brushing and flossing
Brushing and flossing are the staples of good dental hygiene and good
dental health. Everyone should brush at least twice a day, and
preferably after every meal. You should also floss at least twice a day.
These activities remove plaque, which is a mass of bacteria that is
constantly forming on the surface of your teeth. Plaque deteriorates
oral health because it eventually leads to cavities and tooth decay.
Bacterial plaque can cause gingivitis and other periodontal diseases.
Your regular oral hygiene routine should also include fluoride and
mouthwash.
Commit to a daily oral health regimen
As an experienced dental hygienist, Dr. Weinberg in the Palm Beach
Gardens area will recommend an effective oral health routine based
specifically to your needs (see next section). This dental health
routine will be outlined clearly and easy to follow. People with
underlying conditions, including pregnant women, will need to follow an
especially rigid daily hygiene routine.
Understand your own dental health needs.
Your oral health depends on many factors, including:
- your diet
- whether you take medications that may limit the amount of saliva in
your mouth
- daily health habits
- your overall health
- your daily dental hygiene routine
A change in your health status can and will affect your oral health.
Women who are pregnant and those who take certain medications experience
oral changes. For example, pregnancy can cause inflammation of the
gums, which is called pregnancy gingivitis. Patients with asthma, who
breathe through their mouths, particularly when sleeping, can develop
dry mouth, increased plaque formation and gingivitis."
Eat a balanced diet and limit snacks high in simple sugars.
When you eat, particles of food can become lodged in and around your
teeth, which fuel bacteria. The bacteria in the plaque produces acid
every time you eat. This results in bacteria breaking down sugars and
producing acids that begin the decay process eating away at your dental
health. Foods containing sugars or starches (complex sugars), expose
your teeth to bacterial acids for 20 minutes or more. Eventually the
acids can break down the enamel surface of your teeth, leading to a
cavity. When you snack, brush your teeth or chew sugarless gum
afterward. A balanced diet being important goes without saying.
Supplement your diet with all the necessary vitamin and minerals. Avoid
tobacco in any form. This includes smoking cigarettes or using smokeless
tobacco which increases your risk of oral cancer, gingivitis,
periodontitis, stains on the teeth and tooth decay.
Visit the dental office regularly.
As part of your dental health routine, examine your mouth
daily and when you notice changes in your mouth visit your dentist.
Although you may only see your dentist only a few times a year, any time
you notice changes that might be of concern make an appointment
immediately. These changes could include swollen gums, chipped teeth,
discolored teeth or sores or lesions on your gums, cheeks or tongue.
This is especially important for tobacco users, who are at increased
risk of developing oral cancer.

A recent article on Forbes.com
suggested that discount dental plans beat traditional
dental insurance.
Now, this notion of course only applies to certain circumstances. For
instance, if you’re currently covered under your employer’s dental
insurance plan, then it’s probably not necessary to also purchase a
discount dental plan. However, having a discount dental plan can save
you additional money when your dental insurance plan maximum has been
reached.
If you are not covered by a dental insurance plan, then it makes more
sense to purchase a discount dental plan. Why? More than anything, it
comes down to cost. A dental insurance plan can cost you hundreds of
dollars in premiums ($554 is national average according to Forbes) while
discount dental plans typically run between $80 and $140 per year for
individuals (slightly higher for families). Factor in the copays that
are associated with dental insurance plans and the cost savings of
discount dental plans are even more evident.
Discount dental plans also typically provide discounts for
major procedures such as dental implants, but dental insurance may not.
It’s important to read the fine print because plans vary. Other gotchas
with dental insurance include: long wait times for coverage, denial of
patients with certain pre-existing conditions, paperwork hassles,
continually-increasing premiums, typically low annual limits and more.
You
now have more choice and more flexibility in creating dental plans that
fit the needs of you and your family instead of just being stuck with
whatever your boss offered. The time to get a plan is before you have a
dental emergency, not after...
The first thing to do before comparing any dental plans is to contact your dentist if you have one.
If you don’t have one, then you need to select a dentist. In this way, you can call them and find out what
dental or health insurance they will accept. This saves a lot of time and aggravation later on. Most dentists will accept at least two different types of dental insurance. When you get the names of the companies, be sure that you also ask them whether the plan is an HMP or a PPO. Some dentists will only accept one type of insurance from a
company and not both.
Now you need to contact the insurance companies and ask for information
about their plans and what kind of a quote they can give you. You can
often go to the insurance companies' websites and download an
application form so that they can determine how much the quote will be.
You can also call their office and have them mail you an application
form and information on their dental plans. They should offer separate
plans for single people, couple or families. Be sure you find out just
what is covered in each plan. Who covers such things as regular visits,
cleanings, bridgework, cavities or root canals? Find out if there is a
deductible involved. If you have a question, contact the insurance
company. Good insurance companies will adjust policies to suit the
needs of you and your family. Then, you'll get a quote for what the
monthly payments will be.
